Dear Friends,
I am a candidate for the New York City Council 2009 election for the 41st District which encompasses parts of Bedford Stuyvesant, Ocean Hill, Brownsville, East Flatbush and Crown Heights. I believe Brooklyn has enormous wealth and its greatest asset is the people living here. Services for our Senior Citizens need to be enhanced not cut. New partnerships need to be created through existing programming to ensure that our Senior Citizens are being cared for in terms of healthcare, nutrition, housing, taxes and transportation. The increase of property taxes and utilities hurts homeowners and does not promote homeownership. In these difficult economic times many residents are on a fixed income; to pay out more taxes, receive fewer services such as less police on the streets and the closure of fire houses takes away our sense of security. There is also a need to bring diverse programming back to education. Too much emphasis is being placed on standardized tests and our children are being treated as numbers and not investments in the future.
As our nation makes history by welcoming our first Black President into office,
it is essential to continue the new wave of energy to face the challenges
that lay ahead. Currently we are in a time where outside interests carry more
weight than our own community. We have the potential to become a collective
force to bring about the positive change we are experiencing on a national
level into our city, neighborhoods, and our homes. I am a strong advocate
of building partnerships to strengthen established resources and to create
new opportunities. By doing so our community will hold the deciding interest
for acquiring the services that best address its needs. Taking proactive steps
to reevaluate and reinvest in ourselves; I believe we will embrace the values
of community responsibility that is essential to develop the foundation to
influence change and achieve success. If you are interested in becoming a
campaign volunteer or hosting a fundraiser please visit the Contact

Sincerely,
Janelle Hobson
